QR code customization
Dot patterns, color themes, center logos, framed layouts, print sizes, and export formats.
Opening the QR editor
Open the Export modal from the editor toolbar, then select the Share tab. Below your menu link and social sharing buttons, you'll see a QR code preview with PNG and SVG download buttons.
Click Customize QR Style to open the full QR editor. Your changes preview in real time, and nothing is saved until you click Save Style.
Dot patterns & corners
The Pattern section controls the shape of the individual modules (dots) and the three finder patterns in the corners of the QR code.
- Dot styles: Square (classic), Rounded, Dots (circles), Classy Rounded, and Extra Rounded. Each changes the feel of the code without affecting scannability.
- Corner styles: Square, Dot (circular), and Extra Rounded. These style the three large finder patterns independently from the data modules.
All combinations scan reliably. Pick what matches your brand's aesthetic.
Colors
The Colors section gives you three color inputs:
- Foreground: The color of the dots and finder patterns.
- Background: The surface behind the code. Keep enough contrast with the foreground for reliable scanning.
- Accent: Used for the center logo badge background and frame dividers. This defaults to your template's accent color.
You can also pick from your template's color themes. If your menu uses a curated palette (like Bloom or Charcoal), the QR code can match automatically.
Tip: Keep contrast high
QR scanners rely on contrast between foreground and background. Dark-on-light or light-on-dark both work, but avoid low-contrast combinations like yellow on white or dark grey on black.
Center logo
Toggle Show Logo to place your restaurant logo in the center of the QR code. The code uses error correction to remain scannable even with a logo covering part of it.
- Logo source: Uses the logo from your restaurant profile. If you haven't uploaded one yet, visit Settings → Restaurant to add it.
- Smart inversion: If your logo is dark on a dark QR foreground (or light on light), MenuSquared can automatically invert the logo so it stays visible. This is controlled by the inversion toggle in the QR editor.
- Badge background: The logo sits on a small badge using your accent color, so it pops against the surrounding dots.
Frame templates
Frames wrap your QR code with restaurant info, table numbers, and other context so guests know what they're scanning. Choose a template from the gallery in the Frame section:
- None: Bare QR code with no surrounding frame.
- Big Number: Hero-sized table number above the QR code. Great for table tents where the number needs to be seen from a distance.
- Classic: Restaurant name, accent divider, table number, and QR code in a clean vertical stack. The most versatile option.
- Dark Header: Dark band with your restaurant name and table number, white QR area below. High visual impact.
- Full Dark: Fully dark background with the QR code on a white island. Bold and modern.
- Asymmetric: Left-aligned restaurant name with a dark table badge. A more editorial, design-forward layout.
Each template supports portrait and landscape orientations. In landscape, the content and QR code sit side by side instead of stacking vertically.
Frame content & fonts
Below the template gallery, toggle which content fields appear in the frame:
- Call to action: A short line like "Scan for Menu" displayed near the QR code.
- Table number: Print a specific table identifier on the code for table-side ordering.
- Hours: Show your operating hours or a freeform detail line.
- Menu name: Display the name of the linked menu.
- WiFi credentials: Show your network name and password so guests can connect.
The Header setting controls how your restaurant identity appears at the top of the frame. Choose between your restaurant name as text or your uploaded logo.
Pick a Frame font to set the typography. Choose Menu Font to inherit your menu's current typeface, or select Clean (DM Sans), Editorial (Playfair Display), or Technical (JetBrains Mono) for a different feel.
Tip: Table tents with table numbers
Use the Table Tent size preset with a table number to create individual cards for each table. Print them on card stock and fold in half for a free-standing tent.
Size presets
The Print Size section offers five presets optimized for common use cases:
- Default: A balanced square format that works anywhere.
- Table Tent: Taller aspect ratio designed for folded table cards.
- Sticker: Compact format for adhesive labels and small prints.
- Poster: Larger format for wall-mounted signs and window displays.
- Business Card: Standard card dimensions for handouts.
Each preset can be toggled between portrait and landscape orientation. The QR code and frame content reflow automatically to fit the chosen layout.
At smaller presets, some content fields are automatically hidden to keep the frame legible. A hint below the toggles tells you how many fields were hidden by the size constraint. Switching to a larger preset brings them back.
Exporting
Once you're happy with your design, you can export in two formats:
- PNG: High-resolution raster image at 3x pixel density. Best for digital use, emails, and social media.
- SVG: Vector format that stays perfectly sharp at any size. Best for print materials like menus, posters, and table tents.
Download buttons are available both in the Share tab (for quick exports with your saved settings) and in the QR editor (for exports with your in-progress customizations).
Click Save Style in the QR editor to persist your customizations. Your settings are saved to your restaurant profile and apply across all menus.
QR settings are restaurant-wide
Your QR style is saved to your restaurant profile, not to individual menus. This means all of your menus share the same QR appearance, keeping your branding consistent.
